March 29, 2022Valentine’s Day is here, which means celebrations, pictures, and lots of smiles. Smiles are important all year to radiate joy, confidence, and health. However, nothing conveys the meaning and spirit of Valentine’s Day like a bright and beautiful smile. One of the easiest ways to brighten your smile this year is to remove surface stains from your teeth for a brighter and more beautiful smile. Learn more below about professional teeth whitening and how we can help you this Valentine’s Day.
Common Causes of Teeth Discoloration
It is clear from the growth in teeth whitening products that a bright smile is important to many people. However, enamel can lose its shiny, white appearance with staining from several possible sources. There two main types of tooth stains: intrinsic and extrinsic. These stains affect different parts of the tooth and respond differently to whitening procedures.
Intrinsic stains which stain the deeper tooth structures are more challenging to whiten and often require cosmetic dental procedures such as porcelain veneers or crowns. Causes of intrinsic stains include discolorations caused by excess fluoride (fluorosis), dental trauma, and taking tetracycline during early childhood.
Extrinsic tooth stains affect the outer layer, or enamel, of teeth. These surface stains are not as permanent as intrinsic stains. They typically can be removed with dental treatments such as Zoom® Teeth Whitening. The primary causes of surface stains can be placed in these three categories:
- Foods and beverages. Some foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, and berries, are well-known for the discoloring effect on tooth enamel. But others such as soft drinks, fruit juices, and tomato-based sauces are among the many that can darken your teeth.
- Dental plaque. The plaque that constantly forms on teeth, if not removed, can cause yellow or brown staining of enamel. If plaque isn’t eventually removed, it hardens and forms tartar, resulting in a darker discoloration.
- Tobacco products. The tar found in tobacco products leaves a dark brown residue on enamel that is difficult to remove with toothbrushing. Nicotine also can discolor teeth with a yellow stain as it comes in contact with oxygen.
